ABS in Latin America
12th Meeting of the GNP HuB Network
The 12th GNP HuB Stammtisch explored Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) measures in Colombia, Peru and Brazil. German researchers shared their real-life experiences in navigating ABS permits, covering project details, ABS procedures, and challenges. ABS authorities from these countries provided valuable insights and clarifications. Each session featured lively Q&A discussions, fostering a better understanding of ABS procedures.
Key highlights included the following: In Colombia, ABS regulations apply only to native species, and academic research of a non-commercial nature, such as species identification, may qualify for exemptions. Peru’s ABS framework is clear and researcher-friendly, with exemptions for certain non-commercial research areas, including taxonomy, systematics, and conservation genetics. Brazil’s ABS system requires registration on the SisGen platform for research or technological development involving genetic resources or associated traditional knowledge.
The discussion offered valuable insights and practical guidance for researchers to navigate ABS measures in Latin America and ensure compliance.
