German Research Foundation supports institutions with compliance
6th Meeting of the GNP HuB Network
The 6th meeting of the GNP HuB Network, which took place in March 2022, was co-organized with the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and the focus of this meeting was on the new DFG Guidelines for German academic institutions.
The DFG knows that ABS and the Nagoya Protocol present a major challenge for the research community
The DFG has been following ABS and the Nagoya Protocol for a long time and it represents the interests of the academic research community in the relevant political processes.
The DFG has also taken a proactive approach to address low awareness levels among researchers and to help them with understanding and dealing with their ABS obligations. This includes developing guidelines and tools like model clauses.
New guidelines – help for German academic institutions
The EU Regulation creates obligations at the individual and institutional level.
The DFG’s latest publication is a set of guidelines to help German the management of German academic institutions with understanding institutional obligations with respect to ABS and the EU ABS Regulation and to provide an impulse to create the necessary structures to address them.
The new guidelines are available on DFG’s website (German only).
Implementation takes time
Ensuring compliance with ABS and the EU Regulation at the institutional level is not easy. Although the DFG guidelines have been very important for raising awareness, especially at the management level, it will take time before all institutions have fully addressed all aspects.

The next Stammtisch will take place in June 2022.
