3rd Meeting of the GNP HuB Network (3. GNP HuB Stammtisch)
Practical ABS challenges and dealing with them
ABS is not always straightforward. Academic researchers, unfortunately, face a number of practical challenges.
On 25 March 2021, the German Nagoya Protocol HuB (GNP HuB) Network held its 3rd regular meeting or “Stammtisch”, bringing together around 35 participants from various academic institutions across Germany.
This time we focused our discussion on how to deal with these challenges.
Impulse presentations – ABS experiences from around the world
We kicked off with four short impulse presentations from researchers about their ABS experiences in Kenya, Cameroon, Vietnam and Senegal.
Although they are at different stages of the ABS process (finalized vs. in progress) and involve different countries, all speakers emphasized the importance of starting the ABS early and the value of having partners in the provider country who support the process.
Sharing ideas and finding solutions to common problems
In the online breakout rooms, participants had the chance to discuss their individual ABS challenges.
The groups were tasked with coming up with a list of practical recommendations for dealing with these challenges. The outputs included both suggested strategies as well as pointing to existing tools that can support the ABS process, e.g. model clauses and best practice guidelines.
See you again soon!
Thank you to everyone who attended our 3rd Stammtisch and for the highly constructive discussions. Keep an eye out for the report in the GNP HuB library!
The next Stammtisch will be in June 2021 and we look forward to seeing everyone again in summer!
